Started his career as a prospective reporter in a small newspaper in Samarinda, East Kalimantan in 1975. In 1976, he became a journalist for Tempo magazine. Since 1982, Dahlan Iskan worked as a journalist at Jawapos, his career in Jawa Pos increased and became the CEO of the Jawa Pos and Jawa Pos networks. He is also the Managing Director of PLN since December 23, 2009. On October 19, Dahlan Iskan was appointed Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN).

Since the end of 2009, Dahlan was appointed as PLN's managing director to replace Fahmi Mochtar who was criticized because during his leadership there were many blackouts in the Jakarta area. Since leading PLN, Dahlan made several breakthroughs including free pet payments in Indonesia within 6 months, one million connections a day. Dahlan also plans to build PLTS on 100 islands in 2011. Previously, in 2010 PLN had succeeded in building PLTS on 5 islands in eastern Indonesia, namely Banda Island, Manado Bunaken, Derawan East Kalimantan, Southeast Sulawesi Wakatobi, and Citrawangan. Aside from being the leader of the Jawa Pos Group, Dahlan is also the president director of two private power generation companies: PT Cahaya Fajar Kaltim in East Kalimantan and PT Prima Electric Power in Surabaya.

On October 17, 2011, Dahlan Iskan was appointed as the successor to the SOE Minister who was suffering from illness. He was sobbed and moved when he was called as minister of BUMN because he was hard to leave PLN, which he said was at the peak of his enthusiasm to reform PLN.


2. Dahlan Iskan's Childhood

Little Dahlan was raised in a rural environment which was completely lacking, but very thick in his religious atmosphere. There is an interesting story that I read in his book 'Hati Change' which illustrates how completely lacked when he was a child. It was told that little Dahlan only had one shorts and one shirt, but still had one sarong! And with Pak Dahlan's fresh jokes he tells the greatness of the sarong that he has. Here he tells me that a sarong can be anything. Starting to be a tool of worship, looking for sustenance, entertainment tools, fashion, health to become a tool to frighten.

If Dahlan is little more washing clothes, a sarong can be blown on his upper body. When washing pants, a sarong can be used as a subordinate. If you are looking for the remnants of a rich soybean crop, the sarong can be used as a sack. If the stomach is hungry and there is no food at home, the sarong can be tied tightly to the waist so he is a reliable abdominal pad. If you want to pray, be him an important object to face God. When it's cold, become a blanket. If the glove is torn it can still be sewn. If the stitching is torn again, it can still be patched. Even if the patch is torn, the sarong won't necessarily retire. Can still be torn again, a large part can be used as a pillowcase and a small part can be used as baby diapers. There is a lesson that we can learn from his story, that whatever our conditions, whether lacking, enough or more we must remain grateful, patient and must enjoy everything as it is.


3. Dahlan Iskan's Leadership Style

Dahlan Iskan's figure stands out as a unique minister. Some of his unusual breakthroughs became trending topics. His recent controversial moves, such as forcibly opening toll booths or sleeping on mats overnight at the Kulon Progo farmer's house, turned out to have public sympathy.

Every step and movement is fast and the focus is solutions and challenges going forward. All parties - including subordinates - who are related to the problem are invited to think and act creative-creative. Dialogue open and plunge directly down is the mainstay of the method. The virus of enthusiasm and positive thinking - belief in the ability of subordinates to solve problems - is his ultimate weapon.
